Freedom

verse:

Well once again she's all alone,

It's 2 AM he's still not home.

And when the sound of morning calls,

She hears his footsteps down the hall.

She screams, "Oh dear, where have you been?"

And warns him, "Don't come back again."

She tries to cry,

But what's the use?

She tells herself it's not abuse.

chorus:

Freedom.

Freedom.

verse:

He throws her to the kitchen floor,

Unsatisfied he kicks her more.

"Don't tell me how to live my life,

You useless sow, you fruitless wife."

And finally when he gets his fill,

He leaves her there so lifeless still.

She tries to cry,

But what's the use?

She tells herself it's not abuse.

bridge:

She creeps up to his bed at night,

And wakes him with a big surprise.

And now his judgment's coming down,

She cuts him deep, he's bleeding out.

And when the cops arrive,

She lifts her hands and drops the knife,

And the cuffs fit too tight,

But she'll sleep sound tonight.

chorus:

Freedom.

Freedom.

With "Freedom," Pond Monkeys made a conscious effort to move into hard-rock territory. Daniel sings his lyrics with pain in his voice as Derek plays an equally mean guitar. When Derek lets loose on a trademark guitar lead, full of bends and effects, the song is pushed from the ledge of hard rock and into the canyon of raw nastiness. Alex and Austin are the pistons of this song, keeping it pumping along on bass and drums, respectively.

"Freedom" first appeared on the Demonstration IV LP.
